Have you seen small children in rags begging on the streets in India?
I grew up in Mumbai and so I’ve seen them ever since I was a small child myself. I don’t remember how I felt at that time but it breaks my heart when I see them now! I realize that the only difference between me and them is the accident of birth. I had parents and my parents owned a home and had a job. I did not go hungry – I was not beaten or sexually abused. I did not have to beg for food or work in a dark dingy restaurant or at a construction site. I went to school, I had books. We had electricity. We thought that it was intelligence and hard work that got me into college. Now I know that luck was a necessary factor.
Globally, about 400 million children are living in extreme poverty, about a 120 million in India. Don’t they deserve a chance at what we take for granted, a joyous childhood? To develop their potential? Are they not the future of India and indeed the future of our world?
